How a Custom Injection Molding Project Works

  1. Requirement review: confirm part function, material, finish, quantity, tolerances, and quality documentation.
  2. Design and manufacturability review: evaluate draft, wall thickness, gates, parting lines, ejection, shrinkage, and likely molding risks before tooling.
  3. Mold design and manufacture: select the mold standard, cavity strategy, steel, runner system, texture, and expected tool life for the program.
  4. Sampling and validation: mold trial parts, inspect critical dimensions, document findings, and refine the process where required.
  5. Production and delivery: run the approved process, complete secondary operations and outgoing inspection, then package for shipment.

What to Send for an Accurate Injection Molding Quote

For a useful technical and commercial review, send the 3D model and 2D drawing where available, resin or performance requirements, annual and order quantities, cosmetic standard, critical tolerances, target tool life, required inspection documents, and delivery destination. If the material is undecided, describe the operating temperature, load, chemical exposure, appearance, regulatory, and cost requirements.

What files are needed for an injection molding quote?

A 3D CAD file such as STEP or X_T is the best starting point. Add a 2D drawing for critical dimensions, tolerances, threads, finishes, and inspection requirements. Physical samples or dimensioned photographs can be reviewed when CAD is not yet available.

Which plastics can Rilong injection mold?

Available materials include common resins such as ABS, PP, PE, PC, nylon, POM, PVC, TPE, and TPU, plus engineering polymers including PEEK, PPS, PEI, and LCP. Final resin selection should be based on part performance, processing, compliance, appearance, and cost.

Can one supplier handle the mold and molded parts?

Yes. Rilong’s scope covers mold design and manufacture, trial and validation, injection-molded part production, secondary finishing, inspection, packaging, and fulfillment. Keeping tooling and molding under one program reduces handoffs when resolving manufacturability or process issues.

How is part quality verified before production?

Verification can include mold trials, First Article Inspection, dimensional reports for defined characteristics, customer sample approval, and outgoing inspection. The drawing and purchase requirements should identify critical dimensions and the records required for release.

How long does a custom injection molding project take?

Timing depends on part complexity, mold construction, material availability, finishing, validation, and required design changes. Rilong confirms a project schedule after reviewing the files and requirements rather than applying one lead time to every mold.
